Found in inshore waters all around the country, but most common from Kaikoura (Ref. 9258). Recorded Waitangi estuary, Hawke Bay (Ref. 89009) and from bottom trawls off the east coast of South Island (Ref. 58461). Landed throughout the year but mainly from April to October when schooling at surface (Ref. 9258). Voucher specimen(s) held at the NMNZ.

Stock structure: Genetic studies have indicated that eastern Australian salmon in New Zealand waters form a further discrete breeding population, although they are not sufficiently different for them to be considered more than a subspecies of A. trutta (Ref. 27969).
